Lumen is a device designed to measure metabolic parameters using the concept of respiratory quotient (RQ) and oxygen consumption (VO2). Here is how the Lumen metabolic measurement process works: 
 
1. Breathing into the Device: Users breathe into the Lumen device, typically after fasting for at least six hours. This initial breath is used to establish a baseline for the metabolic measurement. 
 
2. Gas Analysis: Lumen uses a technique known as indirect calorimetry. It analyses the composition of the exhaled breath, specifically looking at the ratio of carbon dioxide (CO2) to oxygen (O2) in the breath. 
 
3. Respiratory Quotient (RQ): The device calculates the respiratory quotient (RQ) based on the ratio of CO2 produced to O2 consumed during metabolism. Different macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) have distinct RQ values. For example: 
- RQ for carbohydrates = 1 
- RQ for fats = ~0.7 
- RQ for proteins = ~0.8 
 
4. Metabolic State Analysis: By analysing the RQ, Lumen estimates the user's primary metabolic fuel source (carbohydrates or fats) at the time of measurement. This analysis assumes that the body's metabolism shifts depending on the availability of nutrients and energy needs. 
 
5. Personalized Recommendations: Lumen provides personalized dietary recommendations based on the metabolic analysis. For instance, if the measurement suggests that the body is primarily burning carbohydrates, Lumen might recommend adjusting the diet to promote fat metabolism (e.g., suggesting a lower-carb/higher-fat diet) to optimize metabolic efficiency. 
 
6. Tracking and Insights: The Lumen app allows users to track their metabolic data over time, providing insights into how diet, exercise, sleep, and other factors impact metabolism. 
 
Overall, Lumen aims to offer users a tool to optimise their metabolic health by providing real-time insights into their metabolic state and offering personalised dietary recommendations based on these insights. The device leverages the principles of respiratory gas analysis to estimate metabolic fuel utilization and provide actionable data for improving overall metabolic fitness.
